The Success Evolution Institute exists to close the gap between what research knows about human performance and what practitioners actually apply.
We know that nervous system state determines capacity. We know that regulation can be learned. We know that organizations can be designed to support rather than undermine human functioning. The problem is not a lack of knowledge. It is a lack of translation.
Our mission is to make this science accessible, practical, and applicable for leaders at every level.
Our Approach
We believe that sustainable performance requires understanding physiology, not just psychology. Traditional leadership development focuses on mindset, strategy, and skills, all of which are constrained when the nervous system enters a threat state: acute sympathetic activation narrows prefrontal access to the circuits responsible for planning, impulse control, and contextual judgment.
Our approach starts with the body. We teach leaders to recognize their nervous system state, understand how it affects their capacity, and develop practices that expand access to their best thinking even under pressure.
This is not a change in mindset. It is a change in physiology, built on practices that engage the mechanisms that regulate autonomic state directly.
Our Founder
Dr. Joshua McWealth Unamba, PsyD, MBA, is a Doctor of Organizational Psychology (California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University) and a Postgraduate Scholar in Applied Neuroscience at King’s College London (MSc, commencing September 2026). He is an Adjunct Professor at Fresno Pacific University, School of Business, and the Founder of the Success Evolution Institute, a division of Joshua McWealth Unamba Inc., a California corporation.
His work integrates Polyvagal Theory with predictive-processing neuroscience to study how autonomic state governs leadership capacity under pressure. His research is conducted through the Institute’s research arm, the Human Performance Research Lab in Fresno, California.
The S.T.A.T.E. framework carries the written endorsement of Dr. Stephen W. Porges, PhD, originator of Polyvagal Theory.
Endorsement
“Dr. Josh Unamba has created an original and practical framework that thoughtfully integrates principles of Polyvagal Theory with contemporary neuroscience to help readers better understand how physiological state influences leadership, relationships, and performance. S.T.A.T.E. offers an accessible guide for cultivating greater self-awareness, resilience, and authentic engagement with others.”
